Founded by Geoff
Frost in December 1964 under the name of Sound Techniques Ltd, STL
started life as an independent professional music recording studio,
working with artists such as The Who, Elton John, The Yardbirds,
Fairport Convention and Pink Floyd. The Company’s first premises were a
converted dairy in Old Church Street, Chelsea.
As
the equipment available at the time was prohibitively expensive Geoff
decided to design and build his own. This sideline developed into a
separate and highly sucessful business stream alongside the studio.
Later a large order for three desks at once meant that the desk
building operation had to move to bigger premises at Mildenhall in
Suffolk, beginning the connection with East Anglia which remains to
this day.
As the music business went through a
downturn, the Company changed direction in the early 70s and entered
the nascent software market, initially developing a stock control
system for a replacement clutch supplier. The first contact with the
criminal justice sector came with the development of an administration
system for Peterborough Magistrates’ Courts. This initial system named
PAMS (Police and Magistrates System) was launched in 1976 and was the
first full Court administration system covering all pre- and post-Court
activity.
Our expertise in software was complimented
by skills in hardware and cabling, and training and support to end
users, best demonstrated by the Equis system which replaced PAMS and
which by 1997 accounted for a market share of circa 40% of the
Magistrates’ Courts user-base in England.
With this
pedigree, in 2003 STL successfully won the contract with the Lord
Chancellor’s Department to replace the four legacy systems in use. This
contract delivered the Libra system, which is now in use throughout all
Magistrates’ Courts and administrative centres in England and Wales. On
the back of this STL expanded its presence in the criminal justice
sector, and has now developed and supports a variety of case, custody
and administration systems used by major Police Forces, Sheriffs Courts
in Scotland, the Isle of Man Courts of Justice, and the Asylum and
Immigration Tribunals Service.
Since the late 1990s
STL has also diversified and now provides a wide portfolio of ICT
related products and services, including systems integration and
telephony services, to local, regional and national private sector
SMEs. Part of this growth has been assisted by three acquisitions. The
Company remains privately owned and the latest audited accounts
reported a turnover exceeding £13M and staff numbers in excess of 150
employees.
In the summer of 2003 STL moved to its
current premises in Bury St Edmunds and in June 2008 acquired
additional premises near-by to accommodate its growth and
expansion.
In 2008 the Company brought together the
trading identities of The Technologies Group and STL by re-branding as
STL Technologies Limited. The new brand is symbolic of the way we wish
to do business with renewed vigour and changing the approach to the way
we work. The strength in the new brand is underpinned by the simple
statement of the Company’s core purpose which
is:
‘We will use our expertise in business and technology to
bring about a real difference to our clients’ business
performance’.
And we have identified
the following Brand Values to support this Brand
Promise:
Customer Focused, Dynamic, Innovative,
Dependable, Trustworthy,
Professional.
Geoff Frost, Chairman and
founder of STL summarised his approach to work by
saying:
“Enjoy what you do. If you
enjoy what you do, you do it well. If you do it well, you make
money”.
